YAT 21
Year of Awesome Things - in which I do at least one Awesome Thing every week.
This week was much better than last week. Still a little sick, but getting better enough to be more awesome.
Beirut in Central Park - One of the main pruposes of YAT is to get me to do some of the cool stuff constantly happening in NYC. This week I went to the Delacorte theatre for the first time, to see Balkan Beat Box and Beirut play. It was a beautiful night, and the show was really great - both bands were killer, in completely different ways.
Baby Wants Candy - Again, guiltily, I put my own shows on the list. But they were awesome! I love performing with BWC, and our cast for this weekend was about as good as I could possibly imagine. We were 1/2 and 1/2 New York and Chicago folks - and we even had Mark Pender from Late Night with Conan O’Brien sit in with the band on Thursday. On Saturday after the show, we all went to the reliably awful “Caliente Cab Company” and got them to sing to us and give us free flan by lying about it being our bassist’s birthday - always a favorite joke.
New Class - Frank Spitznagel and I started teaching again at the UCBT. The first class was on Saturday and I can tell you right now, it’s going to be another killer group. Don’t miss this class show….
Ripley’s Believe It Or Not! - After spending the morning looking for props, my friend, Tom, and I stumbled into Ripley’s Believe It Or Not! museum in Times Square. I didn’t even know it existed until we were suddenly standing the lobby watching the animatronic fat lady sing “My Humps”. You guys, an animatronic fat lady singing “My Humps” is just about my idea of heaven, so I was sold, instantly. I don’t know if it was low blood sugar or my deep love of freaks and freak ogling, but it was a ridiculously good time. They have a whole room devoted to shrunken heads!!! And half-assed interactive games! I love this place.Â

Ripley’s has hired a bunch of their more famous freaks to hang out infront of the museum sometimes and pose for pictures. I’ve seen the cat guy, one of the lizard guys, and (most insanely) the conjoined twins- one of whom is kinda fat, and the other is a midget who wants to be a country singer.
