Fan Mail - Answered

I get a lot of fan mail from young girls asking for guidance. Usually they are like, “Oh my God, you are the greatest! My top three icons are like 1)YOU, 2)Tina Fey, and 3) (tied) Joni Mitchell and Janis Joplin (would have just been Janis Joplin but the drugs and stuff= Totes Uncool.) How do you do it? How do you have all that superfun, but still avoid doing commercial work?(P.U!)”
Generally my reaction is “oh I should return that email, so I’ll keep in my inbox” but then I get busy and forget about it, and then I remember and am all like “crap! She has totally reordered her list by now!” so I check the email again, and it still has me at the top, so I get to thinking.

First I think, thank God. Thank God that the kids are still listening to Janis and Joni! I had assumed they were all just designing garish myspace pages and going to those rainbow blow-job parties that The Ladies From The View are always talking about. But now, they are getting into some for real awesome music. Kudos, young fans!

Then I think, wow - thanks. Thanks for supporting my choice to never book commercials. It is tough, since I’m surrounded by people who are constantly booking commercials - especially the kind that fly them all over the world or let them work with ponies and kittens. Sometimes I think, “Hey, maybe I should book one of those, ” but then I remember that I have STANDARDS and don’t want to be part of the SYSTEM, and exude SMOLDERING HATRED when I read commercial copy on screen. But I don’t begrudge my friends and colleagues decision to get hired to do commercials, so I hope they don’t begrudge me my right to only AUDITION for them. It helps to know my fans understand me and appreciate my choices.

Then I think - really? Me before Tina, Joni and Janis? Honestly, I don’t get it. But hey, whatever floats your boats, fannettes!

Finally to answer your question - I just do it. Life is full of choices, and each time I am faced with one, I ask myself, “which answer would be superfun?” Then I do that. Unless it’s a day when I’m really tired, or people keep calling me at work asking questions that are CLEARLY ANSWERED ON OUR WEBPAGE, or people in front of me are walking REALLY slow - then, honestly, my judgement gets clouded. But every OTHER day - I make the superfun decision.

So, sorry for now writing back sooner, fannies. Consider this my reply.

i hear ponies and kittens are really hard to work with anyway…no work ethic, always wanting to take a break, consistently missing their mark…i support your decision and genuflect at your feet o’ wisdom.
